On September 11th, 2001 terrorists attacked the United States. Four jet airplanes were highjacked and used as weapons. Two crashed into the twin towers of the World Trade Center in New York City, one crashed into the Pentagon, headquarters for the U.S. Military, and one (diverted, it is believed by passengers) crashed in a field in Pennsylvania.
There were over 3,000 people killed as a result of the plane crashes. New York is still unsure how many people were killed at the World Trade Center and may never have a conclusive figure.
In addition, dead are hundreds of firefighters, police officers and soldiers in the war against terrorism.
