South America is situated entirely in the Western Hemisphere and mostly in the Southern Hemisphere. It is bordered on the west by the Pacific Ocean, on the north and east by the Atlantic Ocean and North America and on the northwest by the Caribbean Sea.
South America has an area of 17,840,000 square kilometers (6,890,000 sq mi), almost 3.5% of the Earth's surface. It has three distinct regions - the Andes Mountains located parallel to the western coastline, the Guiana and Brazilian Highlands located near the eastern margins of the continent, and an extensive lowland plains, which occupies the central portion of the continent.
